I was with the same insurance company for 10 years using the same local agent. My car insurance rates kept going up every time my policy was renewed. I decided to explore and see what better rates I could get with other car insurance companies. Friends and family gave me names of local agents from insurance companies they used. All the agents quoted me really high. Then, I called a major insurance company's 800 number (not through an agent) and got the lowest quote. So, why do people use insurance agents? Is there a reason why it's better to use an agent?

In addition to what a-mac said; if you have a claim but you are unsure if it is covered you can discuss it with your agent without submitting it to the company. (Companies do not like this - fyi)
If you call the company, and it turns out there is no payout on the claim it will count against you and you will probably see a change in your rates.
Remember: you get what you pay for. There is one company that has an 800 number that I would be extremely cautious with…

I was involved i car accident with the other driver taking the blame. My car is damaged and the other drivers insurance company will be contacting me regarding my car. What should I ask them? I am planning to ask about a hire car, who will repair my car or declare it a write off, can I claim for travel expenses whilst without my car and also is it okay to continu driving my damaged car before it is assessed by them. Is there anything else I should ask?

Year, make , model, extent and area of damage? The other party's insurance should pay for a rental…best not to drive the car if the damage causes it to be unsafe or can cause further damage. Total loss is usually when repairs would exceed 70-80 percent of actual value of the car.
Discuss what repairs need to be done, any parts other than OEM that will be used, any betterment involved on wearable items, guarantee on repairs, qualities and expertise of the repair shop, diminished value if your state allows that, any possible long term or post-repair problems that may crop up and need to be supplemented.
If answers are not acceptable, you may want to go through your own insurance and let them go after the other party.

My boyfriend and I got into an accident, where he was at fault. Although he was the driver, the car's mine and I'm insured under it. I have already filed an insurance claim and I'm getting an appraisal right now. The car had extreme damage to the front (hood crushed, bumper torn out, headlights busted, grille pushed in, radiator cracked, and antifreeze liquid leeking out). The car is a 2006 Toyota Avalon w/ 24,000 miles on it. Is it possible that it's totaled?

Since the car is in your name, and he was driving it with your permission, the claim will be made to your insurance, since insurance follows the vehicle, and not the driver. It is very possible that your car is totalled, there could be more damage that you don't know about under the hood, or in the frame or suspension. The vehicle and injurys will be handled like this: The vehicles damage will be handled under collission coverage, you'll be compensated for the damages to the vehicle, and it will be repaired, or if its totalled, they will pay the loss-payee if there is one first, and then you, all payouts will be minus your deductible. The injurys for your boyfriend will be handled under your medical payments coverage, and if it exceeds that amount, it should be covered by the bodily injury coverage. Your injurys will only be covered by the medical payments coverage, and if it exceeds, you'll have to pay the rest, or claim it with medical insurance if you have it. Any other questions, phone your insurance agent, he/she can help.

Getting a driver’s license is a coming-of-age for many kids. It’s their ticket to freedom, no longer having to rely on family and friends to get around. But there’s a price to be paid for freedom: high insurance rates.

My car was broken into and the insurance company wants me to drive the car while the thief's blood is still in it. The areas are being replaced - inner door, glove compartment hood, leather seat - The parts take 3 weeks to get in and they wont pay for my rental car (I DO have rental insurance with them.) while the car is just sitting there waiting for the parts to come in.

It depends on the policy. That blood is a bio hazard and you should not drive it till it has been removed. Remind them that the health department would not recommend you be exposed and that this technically makes the car undriveable.

A friend of mine had their parked car damaged by a driver and the person that did it is not willing to give out their insurance information. There was a police report and unfortunately the insurance information was not captured. Is there any ways to find out what insurance company a person has? Maybe through the DMV or alternative? I realize they may not have insurance but it still would be worth to find out. The damaged car only has liability insurance.

The only way to find out what insurance the person carries is one…. if you have a license plate #…which you dooo… u would need to go to the police station… they are the only people that can get that.. and if they don't have insurance your out of luck..

Also, a good resource is…
